Fire & smoke

What does fire and smoke damage restoration involve?

It starts with making the property safe: boarding broken windows and doors and tarping the roof. Then burned materials come out, the water left by firefighting gets dried, soot is cleaned from every surface it reached, and odor is treated at the source. The rooms that burned are rebuilt last.

Good to know

Why does a small fire leave so much behind?

Because smoke and water travel farther than flames. Smoke rides the air through hallways, vents and wall cavities and settles into fabric and insulation in rooms that never burned. Then the fire department puts water into the building. So most fire jobs turn into soot cleanup, deodorizing and drying jobs as well.

Right after a fire

  1. Don’t go back inside until the fire department says it’s safe.
  2. Leave the power off until an electrician checks it.
  3. Don’t wipe soot or run the heat or AC; both spread it.
  4. Photograph every room before anything is thrown out.
  5. Call (844) 623-3946 to board up and secure the property.

The rules

Do fire repairs need a building permit?

Often, yes. Cleanup, painting and new floor coverings usually don’t, but Petaluma’s building division says most construction does, and Santa Rosa told Glass Fire owners that many repairs would need a permit before work started. Check with your city’s building department, or have us check, before the rebuild begins.

After a wildfire, the ash itself needs care. The state health department says it contains toxic metals and chemicals, and recommends a damp cloth, a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop rather than a broom, leaf blower or shop vacuum. CDPH ash fact sheet. Sonoma County asks owners to leave ash and debris alone until professional help is lined up. Sonoma County guidance. Where the state debris program applies, moving or spreading debris can disqualify a property. CalRecycle. Permit pages: Petaluma, Santa Rosa.

From a customer

What does a fire rebuild look like for a family?

Long, and full of decisions. One customer’s house lost more than half its rooms to a fire, and it was built of adobe brick, so nothing about the rebuild was standard. He wrote that Manny Gomez and the crew were conscientious throughout, and that they handled the rebuilding from start to finish.

“RestoreX handled all of our rebuilding after a fire wiped out over half our home.”

FAQ

Fire & Smoke Questions

That depends on the damage and on what the fire department and building inspector say. Heavy smoke, no power or a damaged roof usually means staying elsewhere for a while. Your homeowners policy may include additional living expenses; your insurer decides that.

Cleaning removes the residue that carries most of the smell, and that has to come first. Odor that has soaked into insulation, ducts or framing then needs deodorizing treatment, and some porous materials smell until they’re replaced. See our odor removal page.

Items that can be saved are inventoried, packed out, cleaned and stored while the house is repaired, then brought back. Things that can’t be saved are photographed and listed for your claim before they go. See contents pack-out.

Yes. Wildfire smoke and fine ash settle on surfaces, in HVAC systems and in soft goods. Cleaning follows where the smoke went, starting with ducts and filters, and ash outdoors is handled carefully because it can irritate skin and lungs.

Yes. Stores, offices and rental buildings get the same process: secure the space, clean or remove what’s damaged, dry out the firefighting water and rebuild, while keeping unaffected areas usable where possible.

Where do we take on fire and smoke jobs?

Anywhere our two offices reach. Sonoma County has lived through several wildfire seasons, so the Petaluma office sees a lot of smoke work along with house fires, while the Hayward crew covers the East Bay, San Francisco and the South Bay. Call (844) 623-3946 and tell us the address.
