Board-up
When do you need an emergency board-up?
Whenever a building is left open to the weather or to people. That happens after a fire, when firefighters break windows and cut into the roof, after a break-in or vandalism, when a car hits the building, or when a storm takes out windows or lifts the roof. Boarding up limits further damage while repairs are planned.
- Windows broken after a fire
- Doors forced during a break-in
- Vehicle into a building
- Storm-damaged windows
- Roof openings from firefighting
- Tree damage to a roof
- Vacant or foreclosed properties
- Storefront glass
Good to know
Why does it matter how fast a property is secured?
Because an open building keeps getting damaged. Rain gets into rooms that were dry, animals and trespassers can get in, and theft becomes easy. Insurance policies also generally expect owners to take reasonable steps to prevent more damage, and a board-up or tarp is usually the first of those steps.
While you wait for the crew
- Stay out of the building if it isn’t safe.
- Don’t pick up broken glass without heavy gloves.
- Move valuables away from open windows if you safely can.
- Photograph the damage from outside.
- Call (844) 623-3946 with the address and what’s open.
FAQ
Board-Up Questions
What do you use to board up a window or door?
Plywood cut to the opening and fastened to the frame, which keeps weather and people out without adding damage. Large openings and roofs get heavy tarps secured over the damaged area.
How long can a board-up stay in place?
It’s meant to hold until permanent repairs are done, which can take weeks after a fire or a big loss. We check that it stays secure and remove it when the windows, doors or roof are fixed.
Can you board up a business after a break-in?
Yes. Storefront glass and forced doors are common calls. Securing the space quickly lets you keep the rest of the business running while the glass or door is replaced.
Does boarding up come before fire cleanup?
Usually, yes. Once the fire department releases the property, securing it comes first, then the cleanup, drying and rebuild. See fire and smoke restoration.
