Sewage cleanup

How is a sewage backup cleaned up?

As contaminated water, not a regular leak. The affected area is closed off, the sewage is extracted, and anything porous it soaked, like carpet, pad, drywall and insulation, is removed and bagged. Hard surfaces and framing are cleaned and disinfected, then dried and checked with moisture meters before anything is rebuilt.

Good to know

Why can't sewage-soaked materials just be dried?

Because drying doesn’t remove what’s in the water. Sewage carries bacteria, viruses and other pathogens into everything it soaks, and porous materials hold onto them. Carpet, pad, drywall and insulation that sewage reached generally have to be removed, while hard surfaces and framing can be cleaned, disinfected and dried.

Sewage backing up right now?

  1. Stop using toilets, sinks, showers and the washer.
  2. Keep kids and pets away from the water.
  3. Don’t use a household vacuum or shop vac on it.
  4. Turn off the HVAC if it pulls air from the area.
  5. Call (844) 623-3946; a plumber may need to clear the line.

The rules

Who is responsible for the sewer line to your house?

Usually the owner. In Petaluma, every sewer lateral belongs to the property owner, from the building to the connection at the city main, and Hayward maintains only city-owned lines. In Oakland and several nearby cities, EBMUD requires a lateral compliance certificate when a home sells or before a remodel over $100,000 gets final sign-off.

$2,000Most Petaluma’s lateral grant pays: half of approved costs

The California Plumbing Code calls for a backwater valve on fixtures that sit below the next upstream sewer manhole cover, and the Oro Loma Sanitary District requires backflow protection after a structure is damaged by a blockage. A plumber can tell you whether yours applies. Petaluma lateral grant · Hayward sewer overflows · EBMUD private sewer laterals · Oro Loma backflow rule.

FAQ

Sewage Cleanup Questions

A plumber clears or repairs the line, whether it’s a clog, roots or a broken pipe. If the problem is in the city’s main rather than your lateral, the city or sanitary district handles that part. We handle the cleanup and drying inside.

Often, if the backup is confined to one area that can be sealed off and you still have a working bathroom. Children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system should stay away from the affected rooms until the cleanup is done.

The sewage is pumped out, contaminated insulation and vapor barrier are removed, the soil and framing are treated, and the space is dried. A new vapor barrier and insulation go in afterward. See our crawlspace cleanup page.

Most of it leaves with the contaminated materials. What remains is treated with cleaning and deodorizing once the area is dry. A lingering sewer smell after cleanup can also point to a dry trap or a vent problem worth having a plumber check.

Many standard homeowners policies limit or exclude sewer and drain backups unless you added that coverage. Check your policy or ask your agent. We document the damage either way so you have what you need.
