Biohazard & trauma

What does trauma and biohazard cleanup include?

Removing blood, body fluids and other biological material from a home, vehicle or workplace, along with anything they soaked into. Affected materials are bagged as regulated waste and hauled for proper disposal, surfaces are cleaned and disinfected, and odor is treated, so the space can be used again.

  • Unattended deaths
  • Suicide and homicide scenes
  • Serious injuries and accidents
  • Blood and body fluid spills
  • Hoarding with biological waste
  • Animal waste and rodent infestations
  • Vehicle cleanup
  • Disinfection of homes and businesses

RestoreX, LLC is registered with the California Department of Public Health as a Trauma Scene Waste Management Practitioner (registration #760, Petaluma; #761, Hayward).

Good to know

Why is this different from ordinary cleaning?

Because the part that matters most is the part you can’t see. Blood and body fluids soak through carpet into the pad and subfloor, and they can carry bloodborne pathogens. The work takes protective equipment, disinfectants suited to the job, and disposal of soaked materials as regulated waste, not household trash.

If you’re facing this now

  1. If police or the coroner are involved, wait until they release the scene.
  2. Don’t try to clean blood or fluids yourself.
  3. Close the room off and keep children and pets out.
  4. Ask your insurer whether your policy covers the cleanup.
  5. Call (844) 623-3946. We’ll be discreet and explain each step.

The rules

What does California require of trauma scene cleanup companies?

Registration with the state. Under California’s Trauma Scene Waste Management Act, a business that removes blood, body fluids and other residue from scenes of serious injury, illness or death must register with the Department of Public Health and get the waste to a permitted facility. RestoreX is registered for both of its offices.

The law also says the waste has to leave the scene once the removal phase ends, going to a permitted medical waste transfer station or treatment facility, or into a dedicated freezer for up to 14 days. CDPH keeps the list of registered practitioners and shares it with sheriffs and county health officials. H&S Code §118321.5 · Current CDPH list.

No. Many families prefer not to be. Someone needs to give us access and agree to the scope, and we can handle the rest and walk you through the finished space afterward.

Anything that blood or fluids soaked into, like carpet, pad, mattresses or upholstered furniture, is removed as regulated waste. We check with you before throwing out anything with personal value, and we can set aside belongings that can be cleaned.

Yes. When someone passes away and isn’t found for some time, the cleanup usually reaches into flooring and subfloor, and odor treatment is a large part of the job. See odor removal.

Yes. Landlords, property managers and business owners call us for incidents in rental units, common areas and workplaces. We coordinate access and timing so the rest of the building keeps running.
